WHAT: The 8th Annual New Orleans Bookfair!
WHEN: Saturday November 7th, 2009, from 10am - 6pm WHERE: The 500-600 blocks of Frenchmen St, in the Faubourg Marigny, New Orleans, LA
MIDNIGHT IN THE BOOKFAIR OF GOOD & EVIL
Isn't it reassuring, even in this age of techno-hype, that some of the best literary experiences and events remain entirely digitally unavailable?
The New Orleans Bookfair, a celebration of independent publishers and offbeat books, appreciates the role that technology can play in promoting access to the written word. But isn't it reassuring that something as joyfully weird as the Bookfair still can be experienced only first-hand in one geographic location, on one day, in person? In the faulty, sloppy, virtually imperfect flesh?
Ladies, Gentlemen and Text-Scanning Nanobots, it is that time again. The EIGHTH New Orleans Bookfair is heaving annually into view, looming like leviathan on New Orleans' cluttered cultural horizon. On Saturday, November 7th 2009, in the 500-600 blocks of Frenchmen St., this FREE, open-to-the-public convocation of independent publishers, of writers, of books, book-makers and their wildest possibilities will... erupt! No! Too strong a verb! Will... occur!
Besides boatloads of beautiful books to peruse, ponder & purchase, there will be live music & other entertainment, interactive activities, 'zines-a-plenty, and readings from authors local and otherwise. This year's headliners include JOHN BERENDT, author of (among other works) Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil,
The Bookfair is also hosting the TENTH annual outing of BABYLON LEXICON, an exhibition of avant-artists who use the bound book or printed narrative as a medium of artistic expression. This will blow your circuits, folks, and it's bigger and stranger than ever! Books made of metal, a bowl full of tiny, bite-sized comics, books comprised of squished pastries, books made of pieces of other books, books deconstructed and re-jiggered in ways so creative as to defy press-release copy. You must see it to believe it!
Participating Bookfair publishers run the gamut, from powerhouse samizdat juggernauts like AK Press and MIT Press to local heroes Garrett County Press to earnest individuals selling chapbooks bound in twine. There are plenty of locals, plenty of out-of-towners, and though it's difficult to know for sure, we suspect at least a few high-end human-appearing androids. Children of all ages will enjoy a slate of creative kids' activities, and those over 21 will find their interface with the event enhanced by the consumption of adult beverages at the multiple bars and clubs along Frenchmen where the Bookfair is hosted..
More details can be found on the ever-evolving Bookfair website, http://www.nolabookfair.com, including information on our awesome pre-fair fundraisers: On October 18th, for instance, a Carnival featuring clowns, music, jugglers, art, face-painting, a kissing booth & more! Intrigued? I know I'd be!
Most of the Bookfair takes place in Frenchmen St.'s various watering holes; thus, the Bookfair's theme this year, reflected on our (attached) awesome promotional art, is "A _____ Walks Into a Bar." Come be one of the many beings walking into bars and experiencing delight and edification at just how timeless, entertaining, and cool books are, in their infinite variety... We'd love to see you!
